Smoking and Erectile Dysfunction

Infertility among men is the most common cause of infertility among couples these days. Approximately one in 20 men have low sperm levels which lead to infertility. But there is just 1 in 100 who have no sperm at all. There are many causes of infertility in males – low sperm count, low sperm quality, low semen count, and last but not least erectile dysfunction.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is not able to get or hold an erection as firm as possible for sex. Sometimes it is called impotence, but it is less frequently used now.

ED is not rare sometimes. During periods of tension, many people feel it. Nonetheless, regular ED can be a symptom of health problems needing treatment. It can also be a sign of emotional difficulties or relationships that a professional might have to address.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

The increase in the blood supply to your penis produced an erection. Blood flow is usually stimulated through sexual thinking or direct penile contact.

The muscles in the penis relax when a man is sexually excited. The blood flow through the penile arteries may be enhanced, filling two chambers inside the penis. The penis becomes stiff as the chambers fill with blood.

An erection ends when the muscle contracts and the blood stored in the penile veins will flow.

Causes of erectile dysfunction

There are various causes of erectile dysfunction –

  • Increased age
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Obesity
  • Hormonal imbalances

Apart from these causes, there is one prime cause of erectile dysfunction which is smoking. Stop cigarettes. Smoking is the primary cause of erectile dysfunction for people under 40 years of age. That is because sustaining an erection requires sufficient blood flow and allows nicotine to contract your blood vessels (which allows your penis to fall). The longer you are a smoker, the harder erectile dysfunction becomes to cure or reverse.

Cigarette smoke chemicals damage the lining of the blood vessels and affect how they work. Such chemicals can damage the whole body’s heart, brain, kidneys, and other tissues. Also, if the nervous system is well controlled, the blood vessels cannot be physically feasible due to smoking.

Research about smoking and Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction is more common, but it can be seen in any adult age as men get older. In a 2005 study in the American Journal of Epidemiology, Erectile Dysfunction is more likely to be found in people who smoked than in those who did not. But cigarette smoking is probably the cause of younger men with erectile dysfunction.

Research suggests that the chances of developing erectile dysfunction are much higher if you are a heavy smoker. Stop smoking, however, can improve symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Your age, your erectile dysfunction frequency, and other significant health issues before you quit smoking will reduce the degree of return to safe erectile function.

IVF treatmentsHow to quit smoking?

To quit smoking is the best thing you have decided to do. But quitting smoking is not an easy thing you do. Tobacco smoking is both a psychological condition and a physical addiction. Temporary and addiction-free nicotine from cigarettes. Eliminating that regular fixation of nicotine leads to physical withdrawal symptoms and cravings in your body. Because of the “feel good” effect of nicotine on your brain, you can use cigarettes to increase your outlook, relieve stress, and relax quickly and reliably. Tobacco can be also a way to cope with depression, fear, or boredom.

Steps to quit smoking –

#1. Work on the acronym START –

  1. Set a date to quit – Choose a date for the next two weeks, so that you can brace yourself without losing the drive to leave. When you are smoking mostly at work, stop the weekend and adjust to the changes for a few days.
  2. Tell everyone that you are planning to quit – Let your friends and family quit smoking and tell them that they need their support and encouragement. Look for a mate who wants to stop smoking too. You can help each other in harsh times.
  3. Anticipate the challenges – In the first three months, most people who start to smoke again do so. By preparing for common challenges, such as nicotine retreat and cravings for cigarettes, you can help yourself achieve that.
  4. Remove tobacco products– Throw away all your lighters, ashtrays, and all your cigarettes, and matches. Wash your clothes and refresh anything like smoke.
  5. Talk to your physician– Your doctor may prescribe medicines to help with the symptoms of withdrawal. If you can’t see a doctor, several drugs, including nicotine patches and gum, will be available at your local pharmacy counter.

#2. Divert the urge to smoke a cigarette – You can do so in many ways –

  1. Keep your hands busy – You can squeeze the paper, balls, pencils, pen, and everything that comes to your hand to avoid that tactile stimulation.
  2. Keep your mind busy – Listen to the music you love, make a crucible or sudoku puzzle, play an online game, or read a book or magazine.
  3. Stay hydrated – Get a big glass of water slowly. Not only does the addiction improve, but it also helps to minimize nicotine withdrawal symptoms by remaining hydrated.
  4. Get active – Walk, do push up, try yoga exercises, or run around the block. Get active.
  5. Take a relaxing time –Do something that calms you, for example, meditate, read a book take a warm bath, or practice deep breathing.
  6. Use oral substitute – If cravings hit you keep other things in your mouth to pop. Try mint, carrot, sticks of celery, gum, or seeds of a sunflower. Or suck on a beverage.
  7. The clean and fresh feeling of toothpaste can help to banish cravings.
  8. Go to public places – Go to public places where cigarette is banned for example, in a public building, a shop, mall, café, etc.

Conclusion

It is crystal clear that smoking does have a significant negative impact on male fertility. So, avoiding smoking is the best you can do for yourself and your family. There are various ways to quit smoking but you have to be on your toes to leave the smoking habit.
