Infographic: How Does IVF Process Work?

How does IVF process work? In-Vitro Fertilization ( IVF) makes families possible for many childless couples with an invasive medical procedure.

In vitro, fertilization stands for IVF. It is one of the most widely known kinds of Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART). IVF is a combination of medicine and invasive surgery for egg pick up, fertilization, and transfer of embryos in the uterus. IVF can be done with the help of the intended father’s sperm and egg from the intended mother. In this article, we will have an infographic representation of how does IVF process work.

During IVF, mature eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterus. A complete IVF cycle typically lasts around three weeks. Occasionally, these steps may be divided, leading to a longer process.

In some cases, the donor eggs and donor sperm can also be used for IVF.  It is a long process and needs a couple of months so intended parents need to be calm and optimistic. It is also much more costly than the IUI procedure.

IVF is a long process. It consists of 5 steps

  • Pre-cycle diagnostic testing
  • Ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs in one phase
  • Recovery of the eggs from each ovary
  • Fertilization of the eggs in the laboratory by traditional fertilization or ICSI
  • Transfer of the embryo to the uterus

What is the Cost of IVF?

Natural IVF costs

As part of a natural menstrual cycle, the simplest program, and therefore the cheapest IVF program, is carried out. This means a woman is not encouraged to produce more than one egg in a period of time for the body. This kind of IVF solution can be obtained if a woman has enough healthy eggs or if hormone stimulation is significantly contraindicated. Natural IVF prices begin at $2000.

IVF using Hormonal Stimulation

The system of hormonal stimulation is more expensive than the IVF natural process. It uses hormonal stimulation, involving the production of one cycle of up to 10 eggs. It enables you to fertilize and monitor all eggs by selecting the healthiest. You will have $3000-3500 on average for one IVF or ICSI cycle.

Cost of different stages as a percentage of the total IVF process

  • The initial consultation will cost you around 6% of the total IVF cost
  • ICSI will cost you around 28% to 40% of the basic total IVF cost
  • Hormonal medicines will cost you around 20% to 80% of basic IVF costs. The hormonal medicine will depend upon the following factors –
  1. Your age
  2. The lining of the uterus
  3. Length of fertility
  • The freezing of embryos may be up to 20% of the basic IVF cost, plus approx. 10% of basic IVF storage costs annually and between 20 and 100% of the basic IVF cost of late thawing and transmission. Embryo freezing may be included in the basic IVF costs.
  • Regulatory charges will cost you around  4 to 5% of basic IVF costs.
