Surrogacy Process- step-by-step
Once your detail is collected, the process of matching with Intended Parents start. Looking at the specific requirement by parents and physical attributes, the surrogate can be shortlisted for a surrogacy program. Your availability and menses dates are confirmed. Since surrogacy is not anonymous in India, so Intended Parents can meet surrogate, if needed.
Once you are selected for the program, the medical preparation will start. You will undergo a fertility evaluation to verify the capacity of your fertility and uterus lining. Fertility expert will do a pelvic scan to rule out the possibility of cyst or fluid in the uterus to examine the thickness of endometrium lining. This consists of a physical examination and pelvic ultrasound and more extensive physical exam; blood tests will also be performed. The process of surrogacy and associated risk or side effects will be discussed with you.
3.Pre-IVF tests for egg donor-
- CBC/hb- Complete blood count/hemoglobin.
- Blood group and Rhesus. In case of blood, emergency transfusion is required.
- HIV -Human immunodeficiency virus
- HbsAg -Hepatitis B
- VDRL- Syphilis
- HCV- Hepatitis C
- FSH (CD2-4) follicle stimulating hormone tests for ovarian reserve (must be measured on day 2-4 of menses)
- LH (CD2-4)- Luteinizing hormone (must be measured on day 2-4 of menses)
- AMH Anti Mullerian Hormone.
- Estradiol Level – done on day 2nd or 3rd of the monthly cycle.
- TSH – Thyroid stimulating hormone/thyroid function test
4. Synchronizing with the recipient
To match your menses with the recipient (female partner) and to synchronize your cycle for upcoming IVF, you will be asked to take birth control pills. You will be specifically asked to leave birth control pill on specific dates so that you can have menses as per required dates. Once your menses start, you will be asked to come to IVF Clinic for evaluation and for uterus lining preparation.
5. Uterus lining preparation
You need to take oral meds/ injectable which will help in building the desired thickness of endometrium layer before embryos transfer. It is advised to have a thickness of 10mm at the time of embryo transfer. You will be asked to visit clinic 3-4 times to review the thickness. Generally, the embryos transfer is done on around Day 18 to 21 of your menses.
6. Embryos Transfer
This process of embryos transfer is relatively easy and no anaesthesia is needed. Generally, a catheter is used to transfer the embryos to uterus, trans-vaginally, and the whole process can take up to 15 to 20 minutes. It is a day procedure and you can go home after 1-2 hours rest in the clinic and after that, you can go home and take rest for a day. You will be prescribed few oral and injectable meds and needed to take bed rest for 2-3 days. After this, you can resume your day-to-day activity but need to avoid any strenuous activity. You will be asked to come after 2 weeks for BHCG Blood test to confirm pregnancy.
